Translation of The Holy Quran

17. Al-Isra’ (the Night Journey)

يَوْمَ نَدْعُواْ كُلَّ أُنَاسٍ بِإِمَامِهِمْ فَمَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَأُوْلَـئِكَ يَقْرَؤُونَ كِتَابَهُمْ وَلاَ يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلاً(71)

وہ دن (یاد کریں) جب ہم لوگوں کے ہر طبقہ کو ان کے پیشوا کے ساتھ بلائیں گے، سو جسے اس کا نوشتۂ اَعمال اس کے دائیں ہاتھ میں دیا جائے گا پس یہ لوگ اپنا نامۂ اعمال (مسرت و شادمانی سے) پڑھیں گے اور ان پر دھاگے برابر بھی ظلم نہیں کیا جائے گا

(Call to mind) the Day when We shall call every section of people along with their leaders. So whoever will be given the record of his deeds in his right hand, so they will read their records (rejoicing) and they will not be wronged a whit.

وَمَن كَانَ فِي هَـذِهِ أَعْمَى فَهُوَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ أَعْمَى وَأَضَلُّ سَبِيلاً(72)

اور جو شخص اس (دنیا) میں (حق سے) اندھا رہا سو وہ آخرت میں بھی اندھا اور راہِ (نجات) سے بھٹکا رہے گا

And whoever remains blind (to the Truth) in this (world) will be blind in the Hereafter as well, distracted from the path (of deliverance).

وَإِن كَادُواْ لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ الَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَفْتَرِيَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُ وَإِذًا لاَّتَّخَذُوكَ خَلِيلاً(73)

اور کفار تو یہی چاہتے تھے کہ آپ کو اس (حکمِ الٰہی) سے پھیر دیں جس کی ہم نے آپ کی طرف وحی فرمائی ہے تاکہ آپ اس (وحی) کے سوا ہم پر کچھ اور (باتوں) کو منسوب کر دیں اور تب آپ کو اپنا دوست بنا لیں

And that is what the disbelievers were up to that they might tempt you away from that (Commandment) which We have revealed to you, so that you ascribe to Us some other (things) apart from this (Revelation), and then make you their friend.

وَلَوْلاَ أَن ثَبَّتْنَاكَ لَقَدْ كِدتَّ تَرْكَنُ إِلَيْهِمْ شَيْئًا قَلِيلاً(74)

اور اگر ہم نے آپ کو (پہلے ہی سے عصمتِ نبوت کے ذریعہ) ثابت قدم نہ بنایا ہوتا تو تب بھی آپ ان کی طرف (اپنے پاکیزہ نفس اور طبعی استعداد کے باعث) بہت ہی معمولی سے جھکاؤ کے قریب جاتے۔(ان کی طرف پھر بھی زیادہ مائل نہ ہوتے اور وہ ناکام رہتے مگر اﷲ نے آپ کو عصمتِ نبوت کے ذریعہ اس معمولی سے میلان کے قریب جانے سے بھی محفوظ فرما لیا ہے)

And had We not (already) made you firm-footed (through holiness and impeccability of Prophethood), even then you (owing to your holy and sanctified self and natural potential) would have but trivially gone near to inclining towards them. (You would not have even then bent much towards them and they would have failed. But Allah has protected you from even nearing such a probability through the holiness of Prophethood.)

إِذاً لَّأَذَقْنَاكَ ضِعْفَ الْحَيَاةِ وَضِعْفَ الْمَمَاتِ ثُمَّ لاَ تَجِدُ لَكَ عَلَيْنَا نَصِيرًا(75)

(اگر بالفرض آپ مائل ہو جاتے تو) اس وقت ہم آپ کو دوگنا مزہ زندگی میں اور دوگنا موت میں چکھاتے پھر آپ اپنے لئے (بھی) ہم پر کوئی مدد گار نہ پاتے

(But if supposedly you inclined then) We would make you taste double of the torment in the worldly life and double of the torment in death. You would not then find (even) for yourself any helper against Us.

وَإِن كَادُواْ لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ لِيُخْرِجُوكَ مِنْهَا وَإِذًا لاَّ يَلْبَثُونَ خِلاَفَكَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً(76)

اور کفار یہ بھی چاہتے تھے کہ آپ کے قدم سرزمینِ (مکّہ) سے اکھاڑ دیں تاکہ وہ آپ کو یہاں سے نکال سکیں اور (اگر بالفرض ایسا ہو جاتا تو) اس وقت وہ (خود بھی) آپ کے پیچھے تھوڑی سی مدت کے سوا ٹھہر نہ سکتے

And the disbelievers also sought to shake you off the land (of Makka) so that they might banish you from here. (But had that supposedly happened) then they (themselves) would also not have stayed there but for a little while.

سُنَّةَ مَن قَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَا وَلاَ تَجِدُ لِسُنَّتِنَا تَحْوِيلاً(77)

ان سب رسولوں (کے لئے اﷲ) کا دستور (یہی رہا ہے) جنہیں ہم نے آپ سے پہلے بھیجا تھا اور آپ ہمارے دستور میں کوئی تبدیلی نہیں پائیں گے

This (has been) the practice (of Allah) with all those Messengers We sent before you and you will not find any change in Our Way.

أَقِمِ الصَّلاَةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا(78)

آپ سورج ڈھلنے سے لے کر رات کی تاریکی تک (ظہر، عصر، مغرب اور عشاء کی) نماز قائم فرمایا کریں اور نمازِ فجر کا قرآن پڑھنا بھی (لازم کر لیں)، بیشک نمازِ فجر کے قرآن میں (فرشتوں کی) حاضری ہوتی ہے (اور حضوری بھی نصیب ہوتی ہے)

Establish the Prayers (Zuhr [Midday], ‘Asr [Afternoon], Maghrib [Sunset] and ‘Isha [Evening]) from the declining of the sun till deep darkness of the night. And also (make obligatory) the recitation of Fajr Prayer, for the Qur’an in Fajr (Dawn) Prayer is attended (by the angels and a state of divine consciousness also permeates).

وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ عَسَى أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا(79)

اور رات کے کچھ حصہ میں (بھی قرآن کے ساتھ شب خیزی کرتے ہوئے) نماز تہجد پڑھا کریں یہ خاص آپ کے لئے زیادہ (کی گئی) ہے، یقیناً آپ کا رب آپ کو مقامِ محمود پر فائز فرمائے گا (یعنی وہ مقامِ شفاعتِ عظمٰی جہاں جملہ اوّلین و آخرین آپ کی طرف رجوع اور آپ کی حمد کریں گے)

And in some part of the night (as well, rising from sleep,) offer the Tahajjud Prayer with the Qur’an. This is added especially for you. Your Lord will certainly raise you to a station of praise and glory (i.e. the glorious station of intercession where all the former and later generations will turn towards you and glorify you).

وَقُل رَّبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَاجْعَل لِّي مِن لَّدُنكَ سُلْطَانًا نَّصِيرًا(80)

اور آپ (اپنے رب کے حضور یہ) عرض کرتے رہیں: اے میرے رب! مجھے سچائی (خوشنودی) کے ساتھ داخل فرما (جہاں بھی داخل فرمانا ہو) اور مجھے سچائی (و خوشنودی) کے ساتھ باہر لے آ(جہاں سے بھی لانا ہو) اور مجھے اپنی جانب سے مددگار غلبہ و قوت عطا فرما دے

And keep praying (to your Lord): ‘O my Lord, make me enter (wherever You are to make me enter) with the Truth (Your pleasure), and bring me out (from wherever You are to bring me out) with the Truth (Your pleasure). And bestow upon me from Your Presence the dominance that assists and the power that backs.’
