Rabbits
Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae (which also contains the hares) of the order Lagomorpha (which also contains the pikas). Oryctolagus cuniculus includes the European rabbit species and its descendants, the world's 305 breeds of domestic rabbit. Sylvilagus includes 13 wild rabbit species, among them the seven types of cottontail. The European rabbit, which has been introduced on every continent except Antarctica, is familiar throughout the world as a wild prey animal and as a domesticated form of livestock and pet.

Terminology and etymology
A male rabbit is called a buck; a female is called a doe. An older term for an adult rabbit used until the 18th century is coney (derived ultimately from the Latin cuniculus), while rabbit once referred only to the young animals. Another term for a young rabbit is bunny, though this term is often applied informally (particularly by children) to rabbits generally, especially domestic ones.

Appearance
Rabbits have long ears, long hind legs, and a short tail. They are typically about 16-20 inches long and weigh between 2-5 pounds. Their fur can be a variety of colors, including brown, white, black, and gray.

Behavior
Rabbits are crepuscular animals, which means they are most active at dawn and dusk. They are herbivores and eat a variety of grasses, hay, vegetables, and fruits. Rabbits are also very social animals and live in groups called colonies.

Reproduction
Rabbits are very prolific breeders. A female rabbit can have up to 8 litters of 4-8 young each year. The young rabbits, called kits, are born blind and helpless. They are weaned at around 6 weeks old and reach sexual maturity at around 4-6 months old.

Lifespan
In the wild, rabbits typically live for 2-3 years. However, they can live for up to 10 years in captivity.

Domestication
Rabbits have been domesticated for centuries. They are used for their fur, meat, and as pets. Rabbits are also used in research and education.

Rabbits as pets
Rabbits make great pets for people of all ages. They are gentle, affectionate, and relatively easy to care for. However, it is important to do your research before getting a rabbit, as they have specific needs that must be met.

If you are considering getting a rabbit, there are a few things you need to know. First, rabbits need a lot of space to run and exercise. They also need a secure enclosure that will keep them safe from predators. Second, rabbits need a diet that is high in fiber and low in fat. They should be fed a mix of hay, pellets, vegetables, and fruits. Third, rabbits need to be spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted litters.

With proper care, rabbits can make wonderful companions. They are loving, playful, and intelligent animals that will bring you years of joy.
